Hot Weather - Be Prepared

Are you experiencing extremely hot weather where you live?

Are you prepared for heat-related health problems?

We are enjoying beautiful weather where the temperatures are not quite so extreme but you should be prepared and know the warning signs of heat-related illnesses. Heat Cramps, Heat Exhaustion and Heatstroke are all illnesses that can occur during hot weather. Do you have painful muscle contractions, ususally in the hamstring muscles? Not everyone experiences these symptoms prior to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, but they need to be taken seriously.

Dizziness, fatigue, faintness and/or headache, skin that is pale and clammy, pulse that is rapid and weak, breathing that is fast and shallow and intense thirst are all signs of heat exhaustion.

Warning signs preceded by heat exhaustion and its symptoms are skin that is hot, dry and flushed, no sweating, high body temperatures, rapid heartbeat and confusion.

WHAT TO DO: Get out of the sun. Drink fluids and lie down and apply cool washcloths on your face and neck. Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol and caffeine. Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing, suncreen and a broad-brimmed hat. Avoid unnecessary activity, especially in the heat. Know what medication may affect your reation to the heat. Stay in a well-ventilated area. Circulation of air helps keep you cool. Open a window or turn on a fan or air conditioner. Take a cool shower or bath. Plan your outside activities during the coolest part of the day. Take your time so you don't have to run around in a hurry.

If symptoms become severe, seek medical attention immediately!

Death Valley in the Mojave Desert in California is probably one of the hottest place on earth with temperatures reaching 134 degrees. Teaching Your Child-Developmental Ideas

Before our children started school the parents were given a list of things the child should know before starting kindergarten. Children learn from those they are around very quickly. What a responsibility to bring children into the world and nuture them to adulthood. To me that means you should teach them everything possible from development skills and life skills so they are prepared to function in society as an adult. We should all be balanced in our lives emotionally, physically, mentally, spiritually and socially.


Babies depend on others to care for them. By 3 months your child should be able to follow moving objects with their eyes, turn head toward bright colors and lights, move eyes together in the same direction, rocognize the breast or bottle, respond to loud sounds, make fists with both hands, grasp rattles or hair, wiggle and kick arms and legs, left head and chest while laying on their stomach, smile and make cooing sounds.

My mother use to say, "If a baby cries they are either wet, hungry or tired." If the cry continues they could be ill.

By 6 months the baby should be able to reach for objects and pick them up, smile or try to touch themselves in a mirror, roll from stomach to back, transfer objects from one hand to another, play with their toes, help hold the bottle during feeding time, recognize familiar faces, babble sounds like dadada or bababa, respond to their own name and enjoy playing and singing games.

By 12 months your child should get into a sitting position, pull to a standing position, crawl on hands and knees, drink from a cup, enjoy peek-a-boo and patty cake; turn head when spoken to, show interest in other children, hol out arms and legs while being dressed, put objects into a container, have a 5 to 6 word vocabulary, imitate people and gestures like bye,bye, respond to "no".

By 18 months your child should like to push, pull or dump things, follow simple directions like "bring the ball", pull of shoes, socks and mittens, look at pictures, point with finger to show or ask for something, feed themselves, make marks on paper with crayons, use 8 to 10 words they understand, understand what others say, walk without help, begin to play make-believe.


By 2 years your child should be able to use 2 or 3 word sentences, recognize familiar picture, carry an object while walking, feed self with spoon, play alone, pretend to talk on the phone or feed a doll, turn 2 or 3 pages at a time, look at things others point to, identify hair, eyes, ears and nose, build a tower of blocks, gives hugs or kisses, become excited to be around other children.

By 3 years old your child should walk up steps with alternating feet, put on shoes, open door by twisting know, turn one page at a time, play with others, seek attention, repeat common rhymes, use 3 to 5 work sentences, name at lease one color, use the toilet, express affection openly, express a wide range of emotions and take turns in games.

By 5 years old your child should know their name, address, phone number, age, parents names, siblings names, how to use money when making purchases, understand a check or credit card is money, know their basic colors, know how to use scissors, paste, etc., know how to tell the time, understand about talking to strangers, how to watch for cars when going across the street and obeying signs at crosswalks, know the basic nursery rhymes, how to lose and win at a game, how to bounce a ball and how to count to ten.

Children should be taught how to work by learning basic skills of making their bed, emptying the garbage, feeding an animal, loading and unloading the dishwasher, setting the table, clearing the table, picking up toys, dusting, etc. Children are happy when they are learning everyday skills.

Parents have a responsibility to nuture their children and prepare them to be responsible adults. The more we teach our children to be self-sufficient when they are young the more independent they will be when they are an adult.

Many children in today's world spend too much time in front of the TV or Video Games being intertained instead of being taught life skills that prepare them for the future. Emotional, Physical, Social and Intellectual needs should be balanced in our everyday life. A child who is physical may be lacking in social skills. A very intellectual child may be lacking in physical needs. We are all different and need nutured in different ways.

Canning Applesauce - A week-end project but OHHHHH SOOO GOOOD!

I learned to can from my mother, grandmother and aunts. We use to go to the local canning kitchen when I was a small child, but when the canning kitchen closed I learned how to can at home. When you stand back and look at your bottles filled with delicious food, you realize how blessed you are to have the food to can.

Our apple tree was loaded and we canned 97 quarts of delicious applesauce this past week end. The cost is minimal for us as we have our jars and so sugar and lids are the only items we had to purchase. The savings was about $250.00.

We also canned 27 quarts of string beans on Friday and froze 21 pints of peas. Yes, a busy week end but so rewarding.

My husband and I have always tried to be as self-sufficient as possible. I am very grateful for a beautiful garden and lots of food to freeze and can.

Homemade Sweet Pickles - Never Fail is the best!

Canning season in Idaho brings lots of vegetables and fruits so I decided to post my favorite "Never Fail Sweet Pickle" recipe. I have shared this recipe with over 300 people the past 39 years. (Oops! I'm giving you a clue on my age.) People always ask if I'm bringing my homemade sweet pickles to a church dinner or family event. They are really crisp and worth the time it takes to make them.


Never-Fail Sweet Chunk Pickles
Step 1: Select firm cucumbers, three to four inches long. Estimate how many cucumbers will be needed to fill six to eight quart bottles. Allow for some shrinkage in the finished pickle.
Wash thoroughly and put in a brine of 1 cup noniodized salt and 1 gallon water. I use hard water and keep mixing the brine until I have enough to cover the cucumbers. Place them in a crock or bucket, just don't use aluminum. You may have to invert a dinner plate over the cucumbers to keep them down in the brine. Let stand for three days in a cool, dark place covered with a towel. Stir twice daily with a wooden spoon.

Step 2: Drain, rinse and cover with cold water. Let stand for three more days in a cool, dark place covered with a towel.

Step 3: Drain; cut into 1/2-inch chunks or slice. Put them in a weak vinegar water solution made of 1 cup vinegar with 5% acidity, 2 quarts water and 1 tsp. powdered alum. Put the cucumbers in the vinegar water solution and heat thoroughly. Return to crock or container and let stand in a cool, dark place covered for three days. After three days, drain.

Step 4: Boil the Syrup for three minutes: 6 cups granulated sugar, 1 pint white vinegar, 1 stick cinnamon, 1 tbsp whole cloves, 1 tbsp whole mustard seed, 1 tsp. allspice. Double the recipe if you don't have enough syrup to cover the cucumbers.

Step 5: Each morning for three days, drain off the syrup and bring it to a boil, then pour over the pickles again and cover.

Step 6: On the fourth morning again drain off the syrup. Pack the pickles in hot steriliaed jars. Bring the syrup to a boil and pour over the pickles to within one-fourth inch from the top of the jar. Seal with hot lids and water bath for 15 minutes.

I only make the amount of sweet pickles we can eat in a year as the seals don't last much longer that a year
